Kuwait City, Asharq Al-Awsat—Kuwait has revoked the nationality of at least 5 citizens, citing threats to national security.

The Kuwait cabinet on Monday voted on a draft decree stripping citizenship from a number of citizens, some for obtaining citizenship under false pretenses and others for constituting a threat to the prestige of the state.

The decision comes a week after the Kuwaiti government ordered a review of citizenship laws, calling for people who pose a threat to national security to have their citizenship stripped. This procedure was taken as part of Repeated Article 21 of the Law on Kuwaiti Citizenship No 15/1959, according to state news agency KUNA.

A cabinet statement confirmed that the list of citizens whose Kuwaiti nationality has been revoked includes a former opposition MP and the owner of a television channel. Asharq Al-Awsat has learned that the former MP was denaturalized after Kuwaiti authorities discovered his father submitted false information to gain his citizenship. Sources also informed Asharq Al-Awsat that the television network owner was denaturalized for “inciting chaos.”

This week, Kuwait also forcibly closed two charities with alleged ties to the Islamist Al-Islah Society, in line with tighter restrictions on the operation of NGOs in the Gulf state.

Kuwaiti Interior Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al Khalid Al Sabah said that the decisions come as part of efforts to safeguard Kuwaiti security and stability and to protect the rule of law.
